Captain John's Fish & Chips Owen Sound
Captain John's Fish & Chips 1405 2nd Avenue West. This is the best there is to offer for fish and chips in Owen Sound. Every night is double fish night. They alternate cod and white fish, for the specials. There is a menu, but you never see anyone using it. Fish is good and consistent. Service is fun and snappy. Prices are great. Now I have seen over the last couple years, portion size going down. Last year it was dinner and tomorrows lunch. Older people were splitting dinners. But when they went to serving in baskets the volume went down. You still get a good size dinner for your dollar. The fries are hand cut and cooked to a nice golden brown, the way like them. For the area it is the best overall for your money. The place can get a little smokey from the firer some days, but that shows you how busy the place is.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6
Owen Sound Legion 1450 2nd Ave West. One heck of a good breakfast. (real plate filler). Buffet Style, they dish it to you. They keep dishing the longer you hold your plate out. Eggs, bacon, sausages, hash-browns, beans, toast, pancakes and drinks. Once a month, (second Sunday) 10 to 1 at a cost of $7.00..
I try to get to this every month, it is a good fundraiser for them and they do so much for the public.
They do advertise fish and chips on Fri, but are not consistent with their plans. The day I went to try it out they did not think they were doing it that day... "but there was some spaghetti in the cooler she could do up".
But no fret to me just across the street is Captain John's

Joe Tomato's Restaurant Owen Sound
Joe Tomato's Restaurant 640 10th St. W. I have only done lunches, and liked the food and place. Choices are enough to please everyone and are Ok for kids too. They have a lunch club card. Nice looking place just to stop in for a cold one, but there is enough class to the place you would take your mother here. The staff was great, with me all the time. (This place stands out to me, because they do hire challenged individuals too, and give them a few hours a week. This is so exciting for them, to have a very first job. More places should do this.)
Keep meaning to go back for dinner, will have to put it on my bucket list.

East Side Mario's Owen Sound
East Side Mario's. stands out to me for the Sunday brunch.. They do it up good.. This is not a normal of the chain, just in Owen Sound. Food is fresh, hot and good choices. They raised the price 2$ with no changes to the food, but the people still come. The building is showing a little wear and tare. The service is always good. they have a happy staff. Call ahead and make sure they still do it, because they lack advertising. Front sign is sometimes months out. LOL

Frankie's Restaurant and Pub Hanover
Frankie's Restaurant and Pub, a bit above the bar eatery. New owners. Have been several times and do not find it consistent. Size of meal, changes. They rave about the fish and chips, but mine was under cooked. The prime rib was great, but not the next time I had it. You can really tell when the cook is not there. Lots of seating, room could use a bit of touching up. Places never think of washing down the walls and rubbing a little scratch remover in. Will never be a high end eating place. They do take suggestions. That is a Plus..

The Rockford Restaurant Rockford
The Rockford Restaurant (Hwy 6/10 at Grey CR18 (at the lights)) 519-371-6588. This is a new boy in town. Recommend reservations, as some days it is packed. Food is great, lots of selections and good prices. It is a little above the home cooking type of place. There is a hint of Greek in the style of cooking. (just a hint) Service was great and the owner came to the table to talk. The menu had a selection anyone could chose from. Partner had the pork medallions and I had the schnitzel. Both were good and had distinctive style to them. This make the place above home cooking joints. Save room for desert. I had the bread pudding, yet again a new style, and it was good.
The Chaise Lounge Owen Sound
The Chaise Lounge 229 9th Street East, Owen Sound. Good luck finding their web page. They do not keep it up to date. I have been here several times. The best food came on the day the owner (cooks) were out of town.
Lunches were the better meals. They have a all you can eat fish and chips on Fridays. ( I would not want more) Both our orders were under cooked. They advertise they have the best fish and chips in the area. LOL. Not very kid friendly with there orders. There is live entertainment some nights. Yet again another drinking hole, old decor, and on the dark side. Service is best at the lunch times.
